Alternatives to college course?

first_img Previous Article Next Article I am working at a senior level in training and development, but am findingthat not being CIPD qualified is a barrier to my career development. I do notwant to go to college for three years. What are my options? Peter Sell, joint managing director, DMS consultancy Since the IPM and ITD merged, there has been unrest among many in trainingand development, who feel that they are now the poor relations. This isreflected in the qualification structure, and the bad news is that it will notget any better. The good news is that you can register for an NVQ Level 5 in training anddevelopment now and, as long as you are assessed by April 2003, you willachieve graduate membership of the CIPD. If you are assessed after April 2003,you will have to undertake the Applied Personnel and Development Field, whichincludes an academic management report. In January 2003, when the new NVQs are introduced, an NVQ Level 5 inlearning and development will give you licentiate member-ship. Your otheroption would be to undertake an intensive Masters programme that is recognisedby the CIPD. Victoria Wall, managing director, Victoria Wall Associates There will always be some firms that demand all senior level HR staff haveto have the CIPD qualification, but in the area of training and development, itshould not be a necessity. Improve the opportunities available to you byattending training courses relevant to the areas you specialise in, resultingin further qualifications. You could gain levels A and B with the BPS if theuse of psychometrics for development interests you, for example, or receivetrainers awards in certain fields. You should aim to add to a portfolio of experience and practicalqualifications. In time, they will support and enhance your career developmentmore specifically than the CIPD qualification. Philip Spencer, consultant, Macmillan Davies Hodes It sounds like you already have a wealth of training and developmentexperience as you are currently operating at a senior level. Employers look forcandidates with professional qualifications in their given field, but practicalexperience is still a very important factor when recruiting or promotingindividuals. The CIPD or CTP qualification would add value to your credentials. Iappreciate that taking time out to study at college is not appealing. However, there are a number of colleges and training organisations that provide a rangeof flexible learning programmes. Many of the learning programmes are‘self-paced’, and would fit around professional and personal commitments. In addition, as it is a professional qualification, you may gain supportfrom your current employer. Alternatively, look at other short courses thatwould expose you to new training methodologies and interventions. Accreditationswould add to your professional credentials and benefit your career development. Related posts:No related photos. Comments are closed. Norwegian regulator warns of low rates impact on returns

first_imgThe Norwegian Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanstilsynet) has warned in its latest risk report that if interest rates remain low for a long time, it could be hard for life insurers to make good on the returns promises they have made to customers. In Norway, most pension provision is offered via life insurance companies.Publishing its Risk Outlook report for December, the authority said the capital adequacy of life insurers had been strengthened in recent years, and they were compliant with the Solvency II requirements.“A protracted low interest rate level poses a challenge to institutions’ ability to achieve the guaranteed return on their investments,” it said. Higher risk premiums in financial markets and declining equity prices were of particular consequence to insurers with a large proportion of paid-up policies in their portfolios, Finanstilsynet said.Norwegian pension institutions were rapidly increasing their proportion of defined contribution (DC) pension plans, it said, but contracts with an annual guaranteed return still represented the greater part of their obligations. The authority stressed providers had to tell customers about the risks involved in DC plans.Morten Baltzersen, the regulator’s director general, said: “The transition from defined benefit to defined contribution pension schemes with no guaranteed rate of return entails that the return risk is transferred from employers or pension institutions to the individual member covered by the pension scheme.“It is important that institutions give their customers detailed information about expected returns, risk and costs related to the defined contribution scheme,” he said.Turning to pension funds, Finanstilsynet noted that new solvency requirements for these providers took effect in Norway on 1 January 2019.“Pension funds meet the new solvency requirements, although there are wide variations in their financial soundness,” it said.last_img read more

Rampant Reds end City’s unbeaten record in seven-goal thriller

first_imgLiverpool, United Kingdom | AFP | Liverpool handed Manchester City their first Premier League defeat this season as the rampant Reds won 4-3 against the shell-shocked leaders to show they can thrive without Philippe Coutinho.City swaggered into Anfield unbeaten in the top flight in 30 matches and widely heralded as champions-elect amid talk that they could go throughout the entire league campaign without losing. But 90 minutes later, Pep Guardiola’s side were licking their wounds after their first domestic defeat since the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal last season. They were beaten at their own game as Jurgen Klopp’s team delivered a scintillating display that allayed fears they may struggle follow the sale of Brazil forward Coutinho to Barcelona. In their first match following Coutinho’s exit, Liverpool were on fire from the moment Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave them an early lead.Leroy Sane equalised before half-time, but Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah destroyed City after the break with three goals in nine minutes.Late goals from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan made the final score closer than City deserved. It was a rare chastening experience this season for City, but shouldn’t prove damaging to their title bid as they remain 15 points clear of second-placed Manchester United, who host Stoke on Monday.Liverpool go above Chelsea into third place after extending their unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions. While Coutinho’s departure ended the brief reign of Liverpool’s ‘Fab Four’, Klopp could still call on Firmino, Mane and Salah.center_img And on the evidence of this sublime performance, it won’t be long before they are dubbed Liverpool’s ‘holy trinity’.They quickly combined for a tone-setting break as Firmino’s lofted pass to Mane caught the City defence flat-footed, but when the ball ran to Salah, John Stones made a last-ditch block.Liverpool fans mercilessly jeered Raheem Sterling on his return to the club he left acrimoniously in 2015.And the Kop faithful were crowing even louder when Oxlade-Chamberlain put Liverpool ahead in the ninth minute. When Oxlade-Chamberlain took possession 45 yards from goal, he appeared to pose little threat, but City’s defenders fatally backed off.Advancing at pace, Oxlade-Chamberlain set his sights from 25 yards and unloaded a fierce drive that fizzed past City goalkeeper Ederson into the far corner.– Rattled City –It was only the England winger’s fourth goal following his August transfer from Arsenal and it couldn’t have been more well-timed with Coutinho’s exit having opened up a place in the team.Liverpool were rattling Guardiola’s men, pressing them relentlessly and attacking with poise and pace.Yet City drew level with a bolt from the blue in the 40th minute.Kyle Walker’s raking diagonal pass picked out Sane on the left flank and the German showed superb skill to chest the ball past the slow-to-react Joe Gomez. With Liverpool suddenly exposed, Sane motored into the area, showing deft footwork to open just enough space for a shot that blazed past Loris Karius’s weak attempt to save at his near post.Sane’s second goal in his last 15 appearances should have restored City’s equilibrium and they almost took the lead soon after the interval when Nicolas Otamendi’s looping header hit the crossbar. But Liverpool, fuelled by Emre Can’s running in midfield, refused to let City dictate the tempo and went back in front in the 59th minute.Oxlade-Chamberlain slipped a pass behind Stones, who tried to recover but was shoulder barged out of the way by Firmino as the Brazilian ran clear and chipped a fine finish over Ederson and in off the far post.City were stunned and there was worse to come three minutes later. This time, Salah’s tenacity forced Otamendi to concede possession and the winger teed up Mane, unmarked on the edge of the area, for a ferocious shot that raced into the top corner.Losing all composure City capitulated again in the 68th minute when Ederson run out of his area to clear, but only found Salah, who clinically stroked the ball into the empty net from 35 yards. As Liverpool finally stepped off the gas, Silva struck from close-range in the 84th minute before Gundogan’s 91st-minute effort set up an anxious finale to a remarkable game.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

It can accommodate about 5 200 vehicles, bringing the total number of parking bays at the airport to 17 500.Seven new aircraft parking stands worth R154-million ($20.7-million) have also been added, bringing the total to 105.Two 6000m3 tanks have been installed to increase fuel-storage capacity at OR Tambo International, and together they can hold 60-million litres of fuel.“The upgraded facilities are the all-important first impression of not only OR Tambo International Airport, but also South Africa,” said Hlekane. “It was therefore vital that we provide a world-class African airport with cutting-edge international transport facilitation abilities, technologies and design.”Given the recent developments, the airport is now able to accommodate about 28-million passengers per year.World Cup gatewayMost football fans visiting South Africa for the 2010 Fifa World Cup are expected to use OR Tambo International. “In less than 50 days the airport will serve as the gateway to South Africa for hundreds of thousands of 2010 Fifa World Cup fans and millions of future tourists,” Hlekane said. The completed projects signify South Africa’s readiness to host the spectacle, Zuma said. “The completion is a practical example of our readiness to host the Fifa Soccer World Cup, while also providing proof of the benefits of this tournament to ordinary South Africans,” he said.Acsa has upgraded other South African airports as well, both domestic and international, which will play critical roles during the tournament. Cape Town International Airport has undergone a multibillion-rand revamp, while the all-new King Shaka International Airport is ready to begin operations on 1 May in KwaZulu-Natal.The domestic airports in Bloemfontein, East London, Upington and Kimberley have also been upgraded to accommodate World Cup traffic.“The transport sector, in this specific case the aviation [industry], will rise and fly to the greatest heights to meet our obligations to host the most successful 2010 Fifa World Cup ever,” said Sibusiso Ndebele, South Africa’s minister of transport.Honouring an anti-apartheid iconOR Tambo airport is named after Oliver Reginald Tambo, a late anti-apartheid icon who was president of the African National Congress from 1967 and 1991. Tambo is best known for his ongoing efforts to get the international community to sanction South Africa’s former apartheid government.“[Tambo] travelled all over the world to communicate the vision of a free, non-racial, apartheid-free, democratic South Africa,” said Zuma. “It is therefore appropriate that this facility, which represents a convergence zone for people from all over the world, is named after this national and international hero.”last_img read more

The Leadership Playbook: Enough Players on the Field

first_imgImagine your business is a sports team. Let’s use an American football team as our example. You need eleven players to play the game. But let’s say that you don’t have eleven players. Right now, you only have ten players. You’re missing a player, so there is no way you can run your plays, and it is nearly impossible to win. You say, “But it’s not like I am missing the quarterback. I’m only missing the right offensive tackle. Other players are going to have to pick up that work.”Your right guard and your right tight end do their best. But there is more coming at them than they can handle. Your opponent keeps breaking through, and you can’t execute your plays the way that they are designed to be run.Business is very much like a sports contest. Your priority is to build the very best team you can, either by acquiring the talent you need or developing that talent. But you can’t wait until you have the perfect team to play the game. The game has already started. Your business is already operating. You have to have enough players on the field to play your game.If you are in sales and your headcount is supposed to be ten, then you need ten salespeople in the field. If each salesperson has a quota of $1,000,000 in revenue, not having that salesperson means you reduce your chances of reaching your goal. More still, as sales cycles grow longer, the longer you go without that salesperson, the more you put the following periods at risk.Being short in operational roles can be even worse. You might believe you can have the salespeople do the work of implementing the new client they won. But this pulls them out of the field, and it destroys their ability to prospect, to build a pipeline, and to win new deals. If you don’t have the salespeople do this work and decide instead to have someone else do the work, they will neglect other work or do poor work on new clients. If you are in leadership, you need to field the best team you can. But you also need to make sure you have enough players. You cannot play the game without having enough players. Get the Free eBook! Want to master cold calling? Download my free eBook! Revamped IPL rules stump Shah Rukh Khan

first_imgThe new rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which will be applied from next year, have left Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan a bit confused and the bollywood superstar said that it would be fair for everyone if all the players are put up for auction in November.”New IPL rules are a bit confusing. Two new teams added (good). All players should go into pool to make it fair for everyone. Simple & straight,” Shah Rukh wrote on his Twitter page. With the inclusion of two new teams – Sahara Pune Warriors and Kochi – in the IPL, the league’s governing council (GC) proposed a revised structure on Sunday but it has not gone down too well with some of the franchise owners who later voiced their concerns publicly. The new rules state that the 10 teams will be divided into two groups and there would be 74 matches in the next three IPL seasons.Out of the 74, 70 would be league matches plus four playoff matches with each team playing the same number of matches (14 of which seven would be home and the other seven away), as in the previous IPL editions.According to the previous format, the number of matches were 94.The IPL GC also decided that the eight original franchises would be allowed to retain a maximum of four players, including a foreigner and three Indians. Besides the four players, the rest of the squad would be selected through open bidding. It has also been made mandatory for the retained players to be registered for the 2010 season.advertisementThe fee of the retained players would be decided after mutual agreement between the stakeholders.Player contracts will be for a period of two years plus oneyear right of extension by the franchise. The salary cap of the franchisees has also been raised to $9 million. But if any franchisee retains all the four players, it will have to spend $4.5 million per year on other players. The new rules have limited the number of players to 30 for a squad. The two new teams Pune and Kochi, who did not participate in the 2010 season, can sign up to four players from the list of players who were not a part of the squad of any of the teams in the past three IPL editions.(With inputs from agencies)last_img read more
