J Wray and Nephew will sponsor the 2016-2017 KSAFA Super and Major League competitions under the Magnum brand. Last season, the competitions were sponsored under the Charley’s JB Rum label, but at Tuesday’s official launch of the new season at the Wray and Nephew corporate office in New Kingston, it was announced that Magnum will headline the sponsorship of this season’s competitions. The leagues are being sponsored to the tune of $5,500,000, with associate sponsors Charles Chocolate pumping in $1 million, Avis Rent a Car $400,000 and Soccer Xpress $100,000. Wray and Nephew are in the second year of the three-year sponsorship deal, and the Super League winners will take home $1 million while the Major League champions will walk away with $500,000. A contribution of $30,000 will be made to each of the 28 clubs in both competitions, 12 in the Super League and 16 in the Major League, to offset expenses. All clubs will receive gears with the Velle brand, with the Magnum logo on the front and sister brand, Charley’s JB Rum, on the shoulders. The Super League will be divided into two zones of six each, with the top two from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The Major League will also be divided into two groups, but of nine teams each, with the top two also moving on to the last four. However, only the Super League will contest a mid-season final. The Super League kicks off tomorrow with a double-header at Constant Spring. In the opening game, Shortwood play Central Kingston at 1 p.m. while Barbican take on Brown’s Town at 3 p.m. KSAFA president, Ambassador Stewart Stephenson, said Wray Nephew’s sponsorship has enhanced the image of the association. he called on the clubs to maintain the high level of discipline set last season. “Last season, there were no significant incidents of indiscipline. (this season), the emphasis is on quality football and the importance of impeccable discipline and respect,” he said.
